Naturalisation and British Citizenship applications:

Are you wanting to become a British citizen? You must apply by naturalisation - to meet the requirements for this application, you must be aged 18+, be considered to be of good character, want to continue living in the UK, have met the knowledge and life in the UK test and meet the residency requirements. In addition to these requirements to apply for British citizenship through naturalisation, you will also have needed to be living in the UK for the past 5 years, have spent no more than 450 days outside the UK during those 5 years, have spent no more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months and have had settlement (also known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’) for the last 12 months if you’re originally from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) - if you’re a citizen of an EEA country, then you will need to have had a permanent residence status for the last 12 months. Furthermore, you must also have not broken any UK immigration laws whilst residing in the UK.

In the UK, you are permitted to hold what is known as dual citizenship, which is also known as dual nationality, however, there are a significant number of who do not accept dual nationality, so therefore we highly encourage you to check the law in your country of origin in relation to dual nationality before you begin your application to become a British citizen.

The following countries currently do not permit dual nationality:

Andorra Bahrain China Fiji Japan Kiribati Malaysia Nepal Peru The Czech Republic United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Austria Botswana Chile India Kuwait Korea Mauritius Norway Romania The Solomon Islands Venezuela
Azerbaijan Brunei Ecuador Indonesia Kenya Latvia Mexico Poland Singapore The Netherlands Zimbabwe
Burma China Estonia Iran Kazakhstan Lithuania Myanmar Papua New Guinea Slovakia Thailand

When you have made a successful British citizenship through naturalisation, you will be permitted to live and work in the UK free of any immigration restrictions or controls, which therefore means that you can now apply for a British passport.
